In Colombia, 25 youth age 7-26 successfully sued the government for Amazon deforestation over their constitutional right to a healthy environment, life, food and water.
The Supreme Court gave the government 5 months for an action plan for 0 net deforestation.
It further recognized the Colombian Amazon as a “subject of rights” as a person, in the same manner that the Constitutional Court recognized the Atrato River.
The Supreme Court declared that the Colombian Amazon accordingly was entitled to protection, conservation, maintenance, and restoration.
The Court ordered the government to formulate and implement action plans to address deforestation in the Amazon.
