FRUIT FOR ALL KIDS
“Surplus fruit should go to people who can really use them.”
Story
“It all started one summer when the Guava tree in our backyard was overloaded with fruit,” Zach says. “We ate a lot, we gave away a lot, and yet we still had a tree full of the fruit.” And when driving through his neighborhood, he found that not only their own trees but those of their neighbors’ were dropping numerous fruit on the ground. “These fruit should go to people who can really use them,” Zach decided, and that’s needy people at food banks! His friends liked the idea, printed flyers, and as homeowners responded, Fruit For All just took off! They have served 75,000 pounds of various fresh fruit to more than 7,000 families throughout los Angeles County. Every week-end, a tweet goes out to dozens of volunteers: “Hey, we’re climbing some trees, having fun. Come and join us!”
